A further 1000 young people across 29 local sports partnerships are to become fully qualified sports leaders after Sport Ireland extended its partnership with Sports Leaders UK.
The renewed partnership follows a successful pilot, launched in 2015/2016 which has seen more than 2000 young people improve their leadership skills using sport as the hook and volunteer in their local communities.
On completing their sports leaders course, a young person receives an award or qualification that recognises the development of leadership skills such as improved communication, problem-solving and organisation and improves their employability, confidence and life-skills.
John Treacy, CEO Sport Ireland commented:
“After piloting a new approach to sports leadership in 2015/2016, we have been extremely pleased with the results to date and we are now looking at how we further roll-this out across Ireland. Delivering sports leadership means young people develop key skills to become more confident and develop skills that will benefit them for life and give them a qualification at the same time.”
Richard Norman, Chief Executive of Sports Leaders UK:
“We are delighted to be working with Sport Ireland. Their approach to delivering a country-wide solution has been hugely successful in ensuring that young people from all backgrounds can become more skilled, more employable and volunteer more in their local communities. We hope to continue to work with Sport Ireland for years to come.”
