BBC SPOTY Unsung Hero Awards 2020

Nominations are now open for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Awards. Each year, as part of its annual review of the year in sport, the BBC recognises the volunteers whose efforts have meant sports clubs continue to make a positive impact in communities up and down the country.

And alongside the main Unsung Hero award, the BBC has this year launched the ‘Captain Tom Young Unsung Hero’ award, which will be presented to one young volunteer who has made a big difference to their local community through sport during a year like no other due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sports Leaders have always enjoyed a close connection to the Unsung Hero award with learners building the skills needed to play an active role in their community through volunteering and inspiring others to participate.

Winners of the award in 2019 and 2018 bare both Sports Leaders, with Kieren Thompson winning last year to follow in the footsteps of Sports Leaders Ambassador Kirsty Ewen winning in 2018.

The addition of the ‘Captain Tom Young Unsung Hero’ – named after the inspirational Captain Tom Moore who raised over £30 million for charity earlier in 2020 – presents a great opportunity for many current Sports Leaders learners, as it is open for nominees under the age of 15.

Nominations for both awards can be made through an online form and either written, around 500-800 words or as a video of no more than 1-2mintues in length. The awards will see finalists from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and 12 English regions. Four nominees from England will then join the national winners to form a top seven before the winners will be announced in December.

Nominations are open now until the 25th October; find out more, including how to make a nomination, by clicking here.

2020 has been a year that no-one could have predicted, with the Covid-19 pandemic creating disruption across the world. As a result, Sports Leaders, participants and volunteers have had to show incredible creativity, resilience and imagination to keep sport and physical activity going.

If anyone you know, or maybe a learner that you tutor, has shown themselves to be an unsung hero, share their story with us and nominate them for the award! In the meantime, take a look at Kirsty Ewen’s inspirational story or learn more about 2019 winner Keiren Thompson.
