SLQ Sports Leaders is delighted to launch a new, free resource for tutors and learners, the Summer Festival of Leadership.

After such a long time of cancelled plans, unpredictable changes and necessary restrictions, summer 2021 can be the perfect time for renewal, enjoyment and discovery. To help young people re-connect with their learning and their communities, we’ve created a resource containing support and inspiration for Centres themed around a Summer Festival of Leadership.

Summer festivals are a fantastic time to take part in fun activities, connect with friends and family and celebrate with your community. Whether it’s through sports activities, garden parties or music events, the summer is a great time for doing the things you enjoy. With UK restrictions relaxing in the coming weeks, now is the perfect opportunity to think about getting together and sharing experiences, encouraging physical activity and learning new skills.

The resource contains a series of activities for secondary-age students to work through, building up their confidence and knowledge of five key skills: Communication, Teamwork, Self-Belief, Problem Solving and Self-Management. These five skills make up our Skills Framework, which is the foundation on which all our Qualifications and Awards are built.

The Summer Festival of Leadership resource, which includes a guide for tutors and a progress sheet for learners, is available for free to Centres currently delivering Leadership Qualifications. Festival activities are divided up into six ‘zones’, giving the resource its festival feel (there’s even a map showing all the zones across one site). This groups all the activities into different theme areas, such as Outdoor, Green or Positive Futures.

There’s no pressure on learners to complete all the challenges, instead they are free to tackle them as they and their tutors see fit – they could either work towards completing them all or just take on the ones that look the most fun!

Most importantly, the Summer Festival of Leadership is about encouraging learners to have fun, get active and put into practice the skills they will have been working on in the last 12 months.
