SLQ Sports Leaders has awarded St James Catholic High School in Barnet Leadership Academy status after the school successfully completed an application for the award.
Only 60 Centres delivering Leadership Qualifications nationally are currently in receipt of the status, making it a prestigious award.
St James School and SLQ Sports Leaders have worked together for many years, with the school being a pioneer for Sports Leadership, encouraging learners to participate in the Young Leaders Award, Level 1 Sports Leadership, Level 2 Community Sports Leadership and Level 3 Higher Sports Leadership.
SLQ Sports Leaders awards Leadership Academy status to help acknowledge the outstanding work being undertaken by Centres meeting certain criteria, including offering a pathway for learners to progress their studies from one level to the next, as well as providing connections to community organisations and future employers.
Leadership Qualifications provide young people with an opportunity to develop their skills and build their confidence in key areas, helping them to prepare for the challenges which lie ahead and to realise their potential.
At the heart of Leadership Qualifications are participation in volunteering activities and facilitating physical activity, helping to create further opportunities for members of communities that learners are associated with.
At St James, students are encouraged to become passionate about working with young people in Barnet Primary Schools and the local area, providing them with the stimulus to develop a variety of life-enhancing skills. These skills make up the Skills Framework that underpins all SLQ Sports Leaders Qualifications: teamwork, communication, self-management, problem solving and self-belief.
Students at St James learn to organise, plan and deliver sports sessions and events within the school and local community, spreading their enthusiasm for sport and physical activity to their friends, families and wider networks.
By working closely with the Barnet Partnership School Sport (BPSS), learners from St James are actively engaged in running and co-ordinating Primary School Competitions, festivals of sport and disability events.
Headteacher at St James, Carolyn Laws, recognises the important benefits of Leadership Qualifications for the school’s students and their community. She said: “Sports Leadership has been an integral part of the whole-school leadership programme for many years at St James.
“The programme is fantastic in allowing our students to truly live out the ethos of the school and embody our values of excellence, aspiration and service to others. It reaches students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, making it a genuinely inclusive leadership experience, and equips our students with invaluable skills for the future.”
Leadership Qualifications use sport and physical activity to provide young people with an opportunity to develop essential skills and build their confidence while helping themselves and others stay active. Find out more about our Qualifications and Awards by clicking here.
