SLQ Sports Leaders and LTA relaunch Tennis Leaders

SLQ Sports Leaders is delighted to be working in partnership with the LTA to re-launch the Tennis Leaders programme in line with the LTA Youth Secondary Schools Programme, which went live last month.

Tennis Leaders is the LTA’s Youth Leadership Programme, which is delivered by LTA accredited coaches at venues, as well as secondary school teachers within education. The programme was originally launched in 2005 and sees close to 3,000 young people enrolled on the course each year. It is designed to develop young people’s leadership skills, which can be applied across roles within tennis, sport or more widely into other aspects of life.

The programme has been accredited by SLQ Sports Leaders, utilising our experience and expertise to align the programme to a nationally recognised award. The accreditation ensures that learners develop the skills and behaviours most in demand with employers, as outlined in our Skills Framework – these skills are Communication, Self-Belief, Teamwork, Self-Management and Problem Solving.

By demonstrating the behaviours closely associated to these skills, learners develop an effective portfolio of their growing abilities, helping to boost their confidence in putting their skills into practice.

In addition to being accredited, the Tennis Leaders course content has been given a refresh to make it suitable to a wider range of ages. As with all SLQ Sports Leaders programmes, there is a strong focus on volunteering and community activities, making the programme an ideal pathway into a range of opportunities and careers in tennis as well as being a recognisable building block towards coaching qualifications.

To achieve the Tennis Leader award, learners must complete one compulsory module and one additional module, choosing from subjects such as helping in a coaching session or a competition. The accreditation from SLQ Sports Leaders helps to ensure that all modules centre around building up the essential skills within the context of tennis participation, coaching and events.

Lucy Supperstone, Awards and Qualifications Director at SLQ Sports Leaders, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with the LTA to support and accredit the Tennis Leaders programme.

“Tennis remains incredibly popular with young people in the UK, providing a wide range of opportunities to take part in, support and encourage competitive and participative sport so it is a perfect match for our own vision of every young person realising their potential.

“Working in partnership with organisations in this way develops relationships that work for absolutely everybody involved, as we are all able to make the best use of our expertise in our specialist areas to provide the best possible learning experiences for learners.”

Alex Beaumont, Volunteering Manager at the LTA said: “We are excited to relaunch our Tennis Leaders programme this month, with refreshed content for a wider age range of young people.

“A lot of work has gone into this course over the last 15 years, and it is fantastic to see it now recognised and accredited by SLQ Sports Leaders.

“We have lots of course information available on our dedicated Tennis Leaders hub on the LTA website, so if you are a teacher or coach looking to deliver the course, please head here for more information.”

Tennis Leaders is aligned to the LTA’s vision of Tennis Opened Up, ensuring that tennis is relevant, accessible, welcoming and enjoyable. Inclusion and diversity sit at the heart of this, ensuring that development opportunities are made available to all.
