SLQ Sports Leaders is delighted to announce the appointment of two key roles to our Board of Trustees following a recent board meeting which saw Shaun Dowling and Neil Cameron both unanimously elected as Chairman and Vice-Chair respectively.
Shaun, a long-standing member of the SLQ Sports Leaders Board, is Head of Sport at United Learning, a nationwide group of over 80 schools. He has served this role since 2013 with a focus on improving the quality of PE and school sport across the group as well as harnessing the power of sport to raise standards across the school.
A former Head of PE and Director of Sport Specialism, Shaun has previously held vice principal roles in two secondary schools and held a national role with the Youth Sport Trust, which provided him with the opportunity to deliver teacher training in Iraq as part of an EU-funded contract with the British Council.
Neil is the founder of Sport Works, a social enterprise organisation which utilises the power of sport to provide a wide range of individuals with opportunities to improve health, gain qualifications and move into sustainable employment or further training. He is also the founder of Cameron Investment Group, an organisation which supports and invests in unique, innovative projects which change the lives of beneficiaries. The group has a particular interest in investing in environmentally principled property development, ethical tourism, health/wellbeing and vocational training/education.
A former long jumper, Neil founded Sport Works in 2009 and has overseen continual growth in the organisation since. He is a former Sport Science lecturer and has also worked as a Performance Manager in a National Governing Body as well as a number of consultancy and non-executive director roles.
Richard Norman, Chief Executive at SLQ Sports Leaders, was delighted to announce the appointment of both Shaun and Neil to their new roles. He said: “Everyone at SLQ Sports Leaders is excited to confirm the election of Shaun and Neil and we are looking forward to the future of the organisation as a result.
“They both bring years of experience and expertise to their respective roles and we will certainly benefit from the energy and enthusiasm they have for our vision of every young person realising their potential.
“Throughout society we are all entering a period of challenge and uncertainty, where the development of skills, confidence and resilience in young people will be more important than ever to ensure they bounce back from recent setbacks and succeed in the future.
“Both Shaun and Neil bring excellent qualities to the leadership and strategy of our board, providing our entire organisation with renewed focus and commitment to our aims and objectives.”
On the announcement of the appointments, Shaun explained his passion and excitement for the role. He said: “As someone who used to deliver the JSLA and CSLA qualifications as a young teacher, I could not be prouder to now Chair the organisation which was responsible for their inception.
“With the school improvement aspect of my background in secondary schools, I am delighted that Sports Leaders has broadened its impact since those early days. I will work hard in this role to support Richard and the Executive Team in enabling as many young people as possible to learn through leadership and then go on to give back to their schools and communities.
“This is an exciting time in the organisation’s history and a crucial time in young people’s future.”
Echoing Shaun’s sentiments, Neil is also looking forward to future and getting stuck into his new role. He said “Throughout my career I have been closely involved with SLQ Qualifications and Awards, as both student and tutor, and am absolutely delighted to have been appointed as Vice Chair.
“The need for high quality vocational education to support the development of young people, both academically and socially, is as important now as ever before as we navigate the challenges presented by the pandemic.
“I look forward to being a part of the exciting future which lies ahead for the organisation, and in particular, to working alongside Shaun, Richard and the Executive team”.
The two new appointments replace Duncan Lewis and Dave Cove, the outgoing Chair and Vice-Chair respectively, who have both stood down from their roles after completing the full term of office. During their time in post, SLQ Sports Leaders has been through many challenges and everyone connected with SLQ Sports Leaders will wish both Duncan and Dave well for the future and thank them for their work, support and leadership.
In 2020, SLQ Sports Leaders has moved quickly to support learners and education providers with a number of resources enabling the delivery of leadership and skill development in challenging circumstances. These include the ‘I Can I Am’ Crisis Recovery Education Programme and the adaptation of existing Qualifications and Awards to accommodate government guidance around Covid-19.
