SLQ – the awarding body for Sports Leaders’ leadership qualifications – is delighted to have been named as a finalist in the Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB) 2019 Awards in the category for Awarding Organisation of the Year.
The FAB Awards recognise the contributions made by awarding organisations and their employees to education and skills in the UK over the past year. For SLQ to be named as a finalist is a major recognition for all the teams involved in building and delivering its qualifications throughout the UK and overseas.
The nomination for SLQ recognises the organisation’s decision in 2018 to diversify its offer alongside its strength in sports leadership, building on what makes its qualifications stand out from other awarding organisations – the commitment to developing transferrable skills in young people. After extensive work with Youth Employment UK, SLQ developed a Skills Framework for centres and learners to use in tracking and communicating the skills and behaviours developed through SLQ courses.
By focusing on the skills being developed in young people rather than the specific subject matter, SLQ has significantly grown the potential to deliver these skills via a variety of different topics or subjects, including Maths, English or Science, in addition to long-standing courses in Sport, Dance and other active subjects.
Alongside this focus, SLQ has made great strides in the last 12 months in building strategic partnerships with organisations working on the development of leadership and behavioural skills in young people but outside the sports and physical activity sector. This move has allowed the organisation to provide a wealth of new opportunities to more young people and professionals with an interest in this area.
On hearing the news of the nomination, Richard Norman, Chief Executive of SLQ, was extremely proud of the organisation’s recognition. He said: “Everyone at SLQ is delighted to learn that we have been shortlisted by FAB for the Awarding Organisation of the Year award.
“Being recognised in this way reflects the hard work, dedication and imagination shown by everyone at SLQ, not just in the last 12 months but over a number of years.
“These are extremely exciting times for SLQ as the organisation continues to expand its offering, seek new partners and create completely fresh opportunities to provide more young people with the skills needed to realise their potential.
“The nomination from the FAB shows the enthusiasm and vision of our organisation in the best possible light. Combining this with the growing number of organisations working in collaboration with SLQ allows us to continue creating innovative and genuinely impactful opportunities for young people to succeed.”
Now into its fifth year, the FAB 2019 Awards event, sponsored by Creatio, is being as part of this year’s FAB Conference on Thursday 10th October at the Marriot Hotel in Leicester.
The Awarding Organisation of the Year, the category for which SLQ has been nominated, heads up the full list of seven awards, with other categories including Qualification of the Year, Collaboration of the Year and Innovation of the Year.
At last year’s ceremony, Luke Rees was crowned as the Learner of the Year – since then, Luke has been heavily involved with SLQ, representing Sports Leaders as an ambassador to inspire tutors and other learners with his own experience.
