SLQ Sports Leaders and the Association for PE (afPE) are delighted to announce this week the launch of three new professional development qualifications designed to upskill education professionals working in PE, school sport and physical activity (PESSPA).

The new qualifications focus on raising standards within schools by developing the skills of colleagues who provide support to the delivery of PESSPA within the curriculum.

Delegates studying for the qualifications can choose from a Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in PESSPA or a Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Supporting PESSPA. At Level 2, successful delegates will be able to deliver activities that support overall delivery while Level 3 Certificate delegates will be able to deliver PESSPA programmes in schools.

Level 3 Diploma delegates will additionally be able to support pupils to progress beyond PESSPA, benefitting from the qualification’s objective of providing delegates with the confidence to review PESSPA programmes that impact both the school and the community.

All three qualifications are open to teaching assistants, coaches and apprentices involved in supporting the teaching of PESSPA.

To access the new qualifications, delegates will need to register with a Professional Learning Centre (PLC) – these are centres that have completed the training necessary to achieve accreditation from SLQ. To find any PLCs delivering the new qualifications, please use the following links:

Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity

The announcement of these two qualifications follows the recent review of Level 2 and Level 3 programmes carried out by SLQ and afPE. In addition, the two programmes represent the latest joint innovation by SLQ and afPE as part of the Professional Institute for Accredited Physical Education, which is a national, quality assured and respected umbrella organisation that leads and creates accredited subject specific professional development.
