2019 Learner of the Year Award winner Emma Barton

The Sports Leaders Learner of the Year Award is our annual opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievements and incredible progress made by the young people taking on our Qualifications and Awards.

The award provides us with the perfect chance to celebrate the learners who have gone above and beyond to develop their own skills and become a force for good among their peers, encouraging others to take part in community activities, projects or volunteering events while also furthering their own abilities.

This year’s award invited nominations from across the UK & Ireland, with tutors and learners working together to complete entries that highlighted the diverse and far-reaching work of young people.

Learners were asked to assess their ability in the five skills which make up our Skills Framework, which recognises the five attributes identified by research from Youth Employment UK as being essential for young people to succeed. These are: Communication, Self-Belief, Teamwork, Self-Management and Problem Solving. Having graded their abilities at the start of their course, learners were provided an opportunity to show how they had developed their skills and then update their view of their abilities having completed the course.

To accompany this, nominees outlined the activities they had played a part in and the impact they had on their communities. For the award finalists, this was supported by a short video, presenting the learners with chance to bring their nomination to life and demonstrate the environments in which they are making an impact.

After reviewing the entries and much deliberation, our panel of judges selected a small number of finalists, from which the regional winners and, ultimately, the overall winner was chosen.

With that in mind, our 2019 Sports Leaders Learner of the Year was chosen as…
Emma Barton from Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh – congratulations Emma!

Although all the finalists and regional winners were exceptional this year, Emma’s entry was chosen due to her work in activating a variety of age and social groups, while her nomination and entry video perfectly demonstrated the scale of her journey in developing the five skills.

Shaun Dowling, Head of Sport at United Learning and a Trustee of Sports Leaders, outlined the views of the judging panel when considering Emma’s nomination. He said: “While all the finalists are worthy of their nomination, the overall winner is, without doubt, Emma.

“The range of people that Emma has worked with during her Sports Leadership course stood out for the panel – from primary school children to older people, something which is rarely seen with sports leaders of her age.

“Emma presented herself superbly and spoke without notes or guidance, which was compelling evidence of the development of her confidence and self-belief.

“Emma also showed immense enthusiasm and initiative, offering coaching and mentoring to another sports leader, which helped them, in turn, to develop their own skills and self-esteem.

“They are all excellent, but Emma topped the bill.”

The regional winners are: -

Area 1 (South West, West Midlands, Wales & Overseas)
Olivia Dark, Bournemouth School for Girls, Bournemouth

Area 2 (East, London & South East)
Maidah Omar Suufi, School 21, Stratford

Area 3 (East Midlands, Yorkshire & Humberside)
Harry Rudkin, Highfields School, Matlock

Area 4 (North East, North West, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland & Scotland)
Emma Barton, Boroughmuir High School, Edinburgh
