Each year, Sports Leaders UK celebrates the continued commitment of our Leadership Academies to changing the lives of thousands of young people through our nationally recognised leadership awards and qualifications.
Our Leadership Academies are organisations and institutions who put leadership at the heart of everything they do for young people which enables them to up skill their learners with vital life skills such as confidence, communication, organisation and resilience. Only a limited number of organisations are awarded the status of leadership academy and to achieve this they need to demonstrate a strong leadership pathway, high quality delivery, significant impact and engagement with the community and meet a range of additional criteria.
To celebrate the Leadership Academies and their staff who have gone above and beyond in the previous 12 months we crown three centres as ‘Leadership Academy of the Year’ in their respective field:
This year, the winners have delivered a range of leadership awards and qualifications to hundreds of learners who have gone on to impact their communities positively in many ways.
This year’s winners in each category are:
School Leadership Academy of the Year 2017 – Ashlyns School
Ashlyns School is among an elite group of Sports Leaders UK centres with an extensively developed programme incorporating Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Qualifications in Sports Leadership in addition to the Young Leaders Award and Maths Leaders Award. While the school’s leadership programme was considered to be an outstanding demonstration of Leadership, Sports Leaders UK were particularly impressed by the cycle of leadership and use of existing sports leaders to support recruitment and development of new and younger sports leaders.
The engagement and links with primary schools also achieves a significant benefit across the local community and inspiring future leaders exemplified the positive benefits that embedding leadership opportunities for young people can achieve.
FE Leadership Academy of the Year 2017 – Hartpury College
The high standards the college instils within its Sports Leadership programmes particularly impressed Sports Leaders UK and it is clear that these standards lead to the production of Sports Leaders of the highest quality. The strong links Hartpury College has developed within the community with leaders taking an active part in supporting and running events for younger people and those with special needs in the wider community made Hartpury College stand-out against very strong competition.
The leadership opportunities the college has created for the students clearly maximises the impact of leadership and volunteering within the local communities and the benefits this will no doubt have for the sports leaders for a lifetime. Whilst Hartpury College is recognised as a leading college for sports studies, the leadership pathway they have implemented is a fine example of how any college can use leadership to improve all aspects of college life.
Community Leadership Academy of the Year 2017 – Everton in the Community
Sports Leaders UK exists to create leadership skills in young people; improving their skills, boosting their employability, and giving more to their peers and local communities and Everton in the Community's Programme clearly embodies each element of this ethos. Sports Leaders UK were hugely impressed with how the programme has integrated Go Lead, Play Maker and Level 1 Sports Leadership across their primary, secondary and NCS provision to ensure that leadership opportunities are available to as many young people as possible and provide such a positive leadership experience and pathway.
This summer alone, Everton in the Community delivered Go Lead to over 800 young people as part of their NCS delivery.
