Leadership Academy of the Year - 2018 Winners

by Sports Leaders UK,

Posted on the 07/12/2018

Every year we celebrate the excellent work being undertaken by our Leadership Academies – Centre’s who have integrated our qualifications and awards into their core provision.

We received a record-breaking number of nominations for the 2018 Awards with each one featuring inspiring stories of how our qualifications are helping young people to realise their potential.

Below are profiles of our three winners - Sporting Communities CIC, Shenley Brook End School and Derby College.

Community Leadership Academy of the Year
Sporting Communities CIC:

Sporting Communities are a great example of an organisation that has built excellent links within their community. Focusing on deprived areas they were able to provide clear examples of how our qualifications and awards are aiding inclusion.

Driven by a peer mentoring scheme, many learners have gained employment as a direct result of gaining a Sports Leaders’ qualification.

By linking leadership to employability skills, Sporting Communities have been able to equip young people with a range of skills that local employers value.

"I would like to thank Sports Leaders UK for awarding Sporting Communities with this prestigious award. I’d also like to thank all of the tutors for all of the hard work that they put in to ensuring that we deliver high quality leadership training each year. It means a great deal to be recognised for our efforts to up-skill the community.

“Quite often we come across individuals who are low on confidence and unsure of what to do in their life and the Sports Leaders UK qualifications and awards are a fantastic way of creating broad minded, highly skilled, supporting leaders who inspire their community in a number of ways.”

Ben Rigby
Sporting Communities CIC - Director

School Leadership Academy of the Year
Shenley Brook End School

Shenley Brook End School impressed the judges by introducing a bespoke leadership pathway with extensive opportunities for learners. They have used Sports Leaders UK qualifications and awards in a variety of innovative ways including welcoming those with specific learning needs and reintegrating students back into mainstream education - whilst also ensuring that the opportunities are available for all students.

With a pathway of leadership from Year 7 to Year 13, coupled with extensive links with primary schools, local employers and major community events, Shenley Brook End showcased how our qualifications and awards can be flexibly used to benefit students of all ages and abilities.

FE College Leadership Academy of the Year
Derby College

With a pathway evident through the college, Derby College impressed with their commitment to offer Sports Leaders qualifications across a range of subjects.

The College engages with a wide demographic of learners and through links with numerous community organisations and the establishment of an Employer Partnership Group they are able to create lots of opportunities for their students.

The judging panel were also impressed by the way that the college shows recognition of their sports leaders’ achievement in a number of ways and the mentoring system that they have introduced.
