This year, the award nomination process has been updated to be more inclusive and straight forward.

Tutors

Simply complete a short form submitting your details and those of the learner(s) you would like to nominate, including a brief statement about why you believe the learner should be Learner of the Year.

Learners

For the first time, learner applications can be made by completing a short form submitting their details together with either:

  • a 2-minute film with an optional short personal statement, OR
  • a 4-600 word personal statement.

Application guidance

All applications (both tutor and learner) are submitted via Microsoft Forms.

Final video clips should be submitted via We Transfer to hjohnstone@sportsleaders.org. Remember to include your name and organisation name when submitting your clip via We Transfer.

Tutors may nominate up to three learners (and we would encourage you to do so!)

Learners must be nominated by a tutor for their applications to progress. They cannot self-nominate.

Please note that applications including video clips and personal statements (including names and centre names) may be used for promotional purposes on the Sports Leaders and SLQ websites, social media channels and in printed materials, as well as in future Learner of the Year promotion. Submissions will not be passed to third parties. By applying for the Learner of the Year award, you and your learner(s) are agreeing to these terms.

Video nomination option

Learners are invited to submit a short video clip (around 2 minutes) covering:

  • Their learner journey, describing their progress through their qualification, award or programme. Why did the learner start the course?
  • What leadership means to them.
  • What volunteering and/or community events they have been involved with,
  • How the qualification, award of programme has supported them in their education and/or personal endeavours.
  • What the learner plans to do in the future: higher education, volunteering or employment opportunities etc. How will the skills they have developed help them in the future?
  • Finally, we would like learners to make their case of why they should be Learner of the Year.

Learners also have the option of adding a short personal statement supporting their application within the Learner Application form. This is not compulsory for the video submission nomination.

Filming guidance

  • 2 minutes in length.
  • If filming via phone, use it in the landscape (horizontal) position.
  • Try and keep the phone in a stable position.
  • Use the camera on the back of the phone. The quality of the front camera is not usually as good.
  • Natural light is better where possible.
  • A neutral background is ideal.
  • Check the sound and picture quality before submitting. Is there wind noise etc?
  • Consider the location and background of where you are filming. Videos may be used on the SLQ Sports Leaders website, social media platforms and for other promotional purposes. We would suggest avoiding filming in personal spaces such as bedrooms.
  • Learners are advised not to feature others in their film as they may not have permission for that person to appear in SLQ Sports Leaders’ website, social media or communications.
  • Please ensure that the videos are created safely and with appropriate health and safety measures in place.

 Personal statement nomination option

  • 4-600 word limit
