Evaluation & Departure

To help understand what will be covered throughout the day, the information below gives a brief taster of each session.

Introduction

This is a welcome to the training day and introduction to the staff leading the workshops. This sets the scene for the day and outline what is going to be covered, giving delegates some ideas for starting a course.

Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership Briefing

This two-part briefing aims to provide a general overview of the qualification for anyone who works with learners who are aged 13 years and older.

The areas that will be covered include:

  • The Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria
    • You will look at exactly what your learners will have to achieve in order to gain the qualification.
  • Delivery ideas
    • We will outline ideas and examples to help you think about how your learners might achieve the course objectives.
  • Assessment procedures
    • We will look at how you assess your learners and what paperwork is involved in the process, so that you feel confident about these procedures.
  • Quality Assurance expectations
    • You will have an understanding of the Quality Assurance procedures and who else is involved in the delivery of your course, and verification of your learners.

Teaching Leadership 1 & 2 Practical Workshops

These sports hall based sessions will give you the opportunity to understand how leadership can be taught in a practical way. The sessions will convey the difference between teaching sports based activities and teaching leadership skills.

During the sessions we will go through some practical activities that you will be able to use when teaching leadership to your learners. We hope also that by the end of the sessions you will be able to use the actities you already lead to teach leadership.

Although these workshops involve a certain degree of practical activity (but not over-exertive), they are designed to teach important lessons about leadership and not to test your physical ability or sporting prowess. Please wear suitable clothes and footwear (for example, tracksuit/shorts and trainers).

Prior to these sessions, try to consider a few enjoyable games/warm-up activities you lead on a regular basis. Then question yourself, "can this game/warm-up activity be used to teach an aspect of sports leadership?" The practical session will allow you to explore the answer to this.

Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership & Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership Briefing

This briefing is suitable for anyone who works with learners who are aged 14 years and older (SL2), and 16 years and older (CSL). It is intended for new tutors of these qualifications that have not previously received training for this level.

This briefing will look in detail at the content of the two qualifications and draw upon ideas for delivery. The session will give a clear picture of the standards of sports leadership that can be expected from learners undertaking either of the Level 2 qualifications. The briefing will also highlight the key differences and progression of learners moving from Level 1 to Level 2.

Action Planning & Networking

This session provides the opportunity for delegates to consolidate the information given during the day so far and consider what steps need to be taken prior to delivery of the relevant qualification/s. This can also be an opportunity for networking with other delegates or as an open forum for sharing ideas. There will also be resources available for delegates to look through, and Sports Leaders UK staff will be on hand to answer any questions that may have arisen throughout the day.
