Civil liability insurance
Civil liability insurance includes legal liability for third
party bodily injury or property damage arising out of learners
leading activities. It will also cover learners for claims of
breach of professional duty consequent to any neglect, error or
omission arising out of activities associated with the
qualification. The policy is written on a claims made wording and
learners must record and report every incident that could give rise
to a claim. The Limit is £5,000,000 per occurence (except for
Products Liability in the aggregate). However, it will not insure
learners for the loss of or damage to their personal property or
that in their custody or control. INSURER: Royal & Sun
Alliance.
Personal accident insurance
Personal accident insurance covers learners if they have an
accident that leads to permanent total disablement, blindness,
deafness, or loss of limb. Temporary injuries, such as broken
limbs, strains, cuts, and the like are not covered unless they lead
to permanent and total disablement. The benefits are £50,000 for a
permanent injury and £5,000 for a fatal accident. Age limit: Up to
age 70.
Incident notification guidelines
It is important that all incidents that may give rise to a claim
are reported to Sports Leaders UK as soon as possible after the
event. This will enable Insurers to carry out investigations at an
early stage whilst information relating to the claim remains fresh
in the mind. This will also ensure that you are complying fully
with your policy terms and conditions.
In order to achieve this, Sports Leaders UK would ask that you
notify us immediately of any incident that involves:
- A fatal accident.
- An injury involving either referral to/or actual hospital
treatment.
- Any allegations of libel/slander.
- Any allegations of professional negligence arising out of
tuition, coaching or advice given.
- Any investigation under any child protection legislation.
- Any circumstances involving damage to third party
property.
An injury is defined as:
- Any head injury that requires medical treatment (doctor or
hospital).
- Any fracture other than to fingers, thumbs or toes.
- Any amputation, dislocation of the shoulder, hip, knee or
spine.
- Loss of sight (where temporary or permanent).
- Any injury resulting from electrical shock or burn, leading to
unconsciousness or requiring resuscitation or admittance to
hospital for more than 24 hours.
- Loss of consciousness caused by asphyxia or by exposure to a
harmful substance or biological agent.
Please note the above list is not exhaustive and if you are
unsure as to whether an incident should be reported, then please do
not hesitate to contact Perkins Slade Claims Department for further
advice.
Sports Leaders UK would remind all Approved Assessment Centres
that in no circumstances should a learner admit liability or agree
to pay for any damage caused, as this may prejudice the position of
insurers and could result in the withdrawal of any indemnity.
Finally Approved Assessment Centres should note that this is a
Liability Policy where insurers decide if negligence attaches to a
learner. Therefore any payments made to any third parties will not
be reimbursed.
Claims
In the event of your claim or incident that gives rise to a
claim, please contact Perkins Slade Ltd on 0121 698 8050 as soon as
possible.
Accident responsibility
Sports Leaders UK does not accept responsbility or liability for
any injury or loss sustained by a learner, participant, instructor
or any other person during any part of the course.
Insurance against such accident or loss is the responsiblity of
the Centre Course Manager who must ensure that he/she and all the
participants on the course are fully and adequately covered by
Public Products Liability and errors or omissions/professional
indemnity insurance.
Advice regarding all aspects of sports insurance can be given by

Risk activities
A Sports Leader must always work under supervision while on the
course, and must only lead activities deemed safe by the
Tutor/Assessor.
If the Sports Leader is working with a group from another
organisation, it will be the responsibility of the Tutor/Assessor
to brief the staff member from the external organisation with
regard to the competence of the learner and the nature of the
activity.
The following examples would be deemed unsuitable:
- Water sports
- Swimming/diving
- Gymnastics
- Trampolining
- Equestrian
- Contact sports
- Mountaineering/rock climbing
However, any risk activity would be deemed safe it the learner
holds a relevant and valid National Governing Body award.
For example, a learner would need an appropriate qualification
from the British Canoe Union (BCU) to lead a recreational activity
involving canoeing.
If you have any doubts about the suitability of an activity in
the course, then please contact Sports Leaders UK.
