Frequently Asked
Questions/Troubleshooting
Q. What age is this
award suitable for?
A. The Young Leader Award is for people
aged nine to 13, however, we are happy for people above the
age of 13 to do the Young Leader Award if this is seen as the most
appropriate course for them to follow.
Q. How
long does the course take to deliver?
A. We recommend approximately six
to 10 tutored hours for the Young Leader Award. However,
this may vary depending on the group you are working with and the
type of activities you may want to include in your course.
Q. Do we need to be
an Approved Assessment Centre like we do for some of your other
courses?
A. No. There is no need for organisations
wishing to deliver the Young Leader Award to become Approved
Assessment Centres. As long as you are from a school, community
group or other recognised organisation you can simply purchase the
Young Leader Award Tutor Resource Pack (TRP) and start
delivering.
Q. Do I need any
training in order to tutor the Young Leader Award?
A. You do not need to attend training to tutor
the Young Leader Award nor do we offer any formal training
opportunities for people wishing to become tutors. We are confident
that the TRP gives you all of the information and resources you
need to deliver the course successfully. We have put together
some information to further assist with the delivery of
this course which can be downloaded here.
Q. I would like to
involve other people in tutoring the Young Leader Award but they
would feel more confident about getting involved if they did have
some training. Is there anything I can do?
A. Although there is no training requirement,
we do understand that some people will be more comfortable if they
can become familiar with the underlying principles of the Young
Leader Award and experience some of the activities for themselves
first. With this in mind we have created a one to
two hour, practically based 'Familiarisation Workshop' which
can be run in-house to help people 'get to grips' with the Young
Leader Award.
Q. How do I get a
TRP? How much does it cost and what do I get for my money?
A. Download a TRP Order Form. The Young
Leader Award costs a one off fee (see fees &
charges) and for that you will get the TRP (which has
everything you need to deliver your course including resources,
worksheets and games cards) and 100 certificates.
Q. So you send me 100
certificates at the start of my course?
A. No. We allocate you 100 certificates at
Head Office. You will not be sent any certificates at the start of
your course.
Q. How do I get the
certificates then?
A. On the CD rom which comes with the TRP, you
will find a Certificate Request Form. Every time a group complete
the Young Leader Award you simply fill in the form - telling us how
many certificates you need - and we will send them to you. Download
a Certificate Request
Form.
Q. What
happens when I have used up all 100 certificates?
A. Additional certificates are available to
buy from us in bundles. Download a Certificate Re-order
Form.
Q. Can I buy one TRP
and deliver the course in several different places?
A. Yes. We are more than happy for you to
deliver Young Leader Award courses in a range of places from the
one TRP. For example, an SSCo might purchase one TRP and use it to
deliver the Young Leader Award in all of their feeder primary
schools.
Q. But how does that
affect the certificates?
A. We ask on the Certificate Request Form what
organisation name you would like printed onto the specific batch of
certificates you are requesting. In this way your 100 certificates
can be used in a range of different places.
Q. How do I assess my
Young Leaders?
A. The Young Leader Award has no formal
assessment. Instead we talk of candidates 'completing' the course
and we make suggestions in the TRP as to what 'completion' might
look like for your candidates. It is up to you to follow the
guidance and to make decisions regarding who has or hasn't
completed the course.
Q. Nine
to 13 is a big age range, how can one TRP cover so much
ground?
A. The TRP contains differentiated activities,
the green activities are at a slightly more basic level and may be
more appropriate for Young Leaders who are leading playground type
activities, whilst the blue activities are slightly more advanced
and may be more suitable for Young Leaders who are leading more
formal (warm up, activity, game) type sessions. However, it is left
to the discretion of the tutor to decide which activities are more
appropriate for their leaders.
