Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

Learning Outcomes
Each unit is broken down into Learning Outcomes, these Learning Outcomes indicate what the candidate is expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to pass each unit.

Assessment Criteria
It is possible to take each of the Learning Outcomes and break them down further into Assessment Criteria. We can think of the Assessment Criteria as what the candidate will be expected to achieve, in order to demonstrate that the Learning Outcome has been met.


Unit 1 - Developing leadership skills
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand how to improve leadership skills.

1.1 Evaluate their current leadership skills.

1.2 Produce an action plan for the development of their personal leadership skills.

1.3 Critically evaluate the current leadership skills of another leader.

1.4 Produce and agree an action plan for the development of the other leader's leadership skills.

Learning Outcome 2: Understand the principles of leadership styles.

2.1 Describe a range of different leadership styles.

2.2 Explain when different leadership styles are appropriate.

2.3 Describe the most appropriate leadership style for the groups they are working with.


Unit 2 - Provision of sport within the community
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand the health of the nation.

1.1 Describe the general trend of the health of the nation.

1.2 Describe how physical activity can improve peoples' health and fitness or contribute to improving people's health.

Learning Outcome 2: Understand the provision of sport in the community.

2.1 Identify national and local campaigns that encourage fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle.

2.2 Identify local agencies and the roles they play in the delivery of community sport.

2.3 Explain the importance of partnership working within community sport.

Learning Outcome 3: Understand the barriers and the limitations of community sport.

3.1 Analyse attitudes towards participation in sport.

3.2 Identify and assess the barriers and benefits associated with participation in community sport.

Learning Outcome 4: Manage sports/activity sessions in the community.

4.1 Plan a range of sports/activity sessions.

4.2 Lead a range of sports/activity sessions.

4.3 Select and apply communication methods which are suitable for the participants.

4.4 Maintain effective working relationships with others from within and outside of the organisation.

4.5 Apply safety procedures and good practice when working within the community.

4.6 Evaluate the role they played in the sessions and identify what could be improved for future sessions.


Unit 3 - Lead sessions designed to improve fitness
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand anatomy and physiology to inform the planning of health and fitness sessions.

1.1 Explain with examples the roles of:

  • Skeletal system
  • Muscular system
  • Cardiovascular system
  • Energy systems

1.2 Explain how the following systems inform the planning of health and fitness sessions:

  • Skeletal system
  • Muscular system
  • Cardiovascular system
  • Energy systems

Learning Outcome 2: Understand the principles of fitness.

2.1 Explain with examples of application the following principles of fitness:

  • Overload
  • Progression
  • Specificity
  • Variation
  • Reversibility
  • Individual differences

Learning Outcome 3: Understand fitness tests.

3.1 Explain with examples a variety of fitness tests.

Learning Outcome 4: Plan, lead and evaluate sessions to improve a participant/s fitness.

4.1 Perform pre-screening procedures.

4.2 Plan a variety of fitness tests to assess participant/s:

  • Speed
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Power

4.3 Plan fitness sessions for participants that are designed to improve one of the following:

  • Speed
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Power

4.4 Lead fitness sessions for participants that improve one of the following:

  • Speed
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Power

4.5 Evaluate each session and use this knowledge to plan and lead future fitness sessions.


Unit 4 - Organise and lead a sports event or competition
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Plan an event or competition for a specific community group.

1.1 Produce a proposal that outlines the structure of the event or competition.

1.2 Undertake the planning of an event or competition.

Learning Outcome 2: Promote an event or competition.

2.1 Promote the event or competition in a range of ways for a variety of different audiences.

Learning Outcome 3: Work with internal and external partners.

3.1 Work effectively with external partners in the planning and delivery of an event or competition.

3.2 Work effectively with internal colleagues in the planning and delivery of an event or competition.

Learning Outcome 4: Take part in the evaluation of the event or competition.

4.1 Evaluate the event and identify what went well and less well, and suggest what should be done differently next time.

4.2 Evaluate the impact the event or competition had upon the specific community group.

4.3 Report the findings to external partners.

4.4 Independently evaluate the role they played, identifying their strengths and areas for development.


Unit 5 - Legal and ethical responsibilities when working with others
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities when working with others.

1.1 Explain the term 'Duty of Care'.

1.2 Explain a leader's legal responsibility when leading activities.

1.3 Explain a leader's ethnical responsibility when leading activities.

Learning Outcome 2: Understand how to protect others from maltreatment when leading activities.

2.1 Identify the potential areas of maltreatment.

2.2 Explain with examples how to protect children/vulnerable adults.


Unit 6 - Lead sport/activity sessions for children
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand the physical development of children.

1.1 Describe:

  • How children grow
  • How exercise affects children
  • How children learn
  • How children interact with others
  • The importance of physical activity for children

1.2 Describe the key things you need to consider when planning sports/activity sessions for children.

Learning Outcome 2: Manage sports/activity sessions for children.

2.1 Plan a range of sports/activity sessions for children.

2.2 Lead a range of sports/activity sessions for children.

2.3 Select and apply communication methods which are suitable for the participants.

2.4 Work with others from within and outside of your organisation.

2.5 Apply safety procedures and good practice when working with children.

2.6 Evaluate the role they played in the sessions and identify what could be improved for future sessions..


Unit 7 - Lead sport/activity sessions for older people
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand the ageing process and its relationship to fitness.

1.1 Analyse and explain the ageing process physiologically, psychologically and socially.

1.2 Describe the relationship between ageing and fitness levels.

Learning Outcome 2: Understand the diversity of the ageing population.

2.1 Summarise the demographics of the ageing population.

2.2 Identify positive examples of older people participating in sport and recreation.

Learning Outcome 3: Understand the health benefits attributed to older people being physically active.

3.1 Explain the potential health benefits to older people of participating in physical activity.

3.2 Explain the potential benefits to society of older people participating in physical activity.

3.3 Describe the key things you need to consider when planning sports/activity sessions for older people.

Learning Outcome 4: Manage sports/activity sessions for older people.

4.1 Plan a range of sports/activity sessions for older people.

4.2 Lead a range of sports/activity sessions for older people.

4.3 Select and apply communication methods which are suitable for the participants.

4.4 Work with others from within and outside of your organisation.

4.5 Apply safety procedures and good practice when working with older people.

4.6 Evaluate the role they played in the sessions and identify what could be improved for future sessions.


Unit 8 - Lead sport/activity sessions for disabled people
On completion of the unit the candidate must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand disability matters.

1.1 Explain what is meant by the term 'disabled'.

1.2 Explain and compare the social and medical models of disability.

1.3 Describe discriminatory practice and attitudes, and explain how to guard against them.

Learning Outcome 2: Understand the provision of disability sport.

2.1 Identify the different agencies and the roles they play within the delivery of disability sport.

2.2 Identify the different sports and award schemes for specifically modified sports for disabled people.

2.3 Explain and justify the classification system within disability sport.

2.4 Describe the key things you need to consider when planning the provision of sports/activity sessions for disabled people.

Learning Outcome 3: Manage sports/activity sessions for disabled people.

3.1 Plan a range of sports/activity sessions for disabled people.

3.2 Lead a range of sports/activity sessions for disabled people.

3.3 Lead a variety of specifically modified sports for disabled people.

3.4 Select and apply communication methods which are suitable for the participants.

3.5 Work with others from within and outside of your organisation.

3.6 Apply safety procedures and good practice when working with disabled people.

3.7 Evaluate the role they played in the sessions and identify what could be improved for future sessions.
