Frequently Asked Questions/Troubleshooting
Q. What's the first thing I need to do if I want
to deliver the Maths Leader Award?
A. The first thing to do is to purchase the
Maths Leader Award Tutor Resource Pack (TRP). The TRP will give you
the information you need in order to make decisions regarding the
planning, content and structure of your course.
Q. How do I get a TRP? How much does it cost
and what do I get for my money?
A. Download a Tutor
Resource Pack Order Form. There is a one off fee for the Maths
Leader Award (see fees & charges). For
this you will get the TRP, which has everything you need to
deliver your course including resources, worksheets and lots of
practical ideas and 30 certificates.
Q. So you send me 30 certificates at the start
of my course?
A. No. We allocate you 30 certificates at Head
Office. You will not be sent any certificates at the start of your
course.
Q. How do I get the certificates then?
A. On the CD-Rom which comes with the TRP, you
will find a Certificate Request Form. Every time a group complete
the Maths Leader Award you simply fill in the form - telling us how
many certificates you need - and we will send them to you. Download
a Certificate Request
Form.
Q. What happens when I have used up all 30
certificates?
A. Additional certificates are available to
buy from us in bundles. Download a Certificate Re-order
Form.
Q. Do I need to be an Approved Assessment
Centre (AAC) to deliver the Maths Leader Award?
A. There is no requirement for you to become
an AAC, however, in most cases the organisation wishing to deliver
the Maths Leader Award will already by approved by Sports Leaders
UK to deliver one (or more) of our other awards (perhaps the Level 1 Award in Sports
Leadership or the Level 2 Award
in Community Sports Leadership). If your organisation is not
already an AAC for one of our other Awards then please contact us
on 01908 689 180.
Q. So who actually delivers the course? It's
not the PE department is it?
A. A Maths specialist will deliver the Maths
Leader Award. It is hoped that a PE Department with experience of
delivering sports leadership will offer help and guidance to the
Maths Department as they begin to plan for and deliver the Maths
Leader Award, but the course is about teaching young people how to
lead others through basic maths activities not about teaching maths
through sport or vice versa.
Q. What age do people need to be to do the
Maths Leader Award?
A. Learners must be 13 or older on the
day that your course starts.
Q. Is there an ideal group size?
A. The ideal number of learners to have on
your course will vary depending on the type of learner you
work with and the type of course you run. However, it is worth
bearing in mind that the larger the numbers the longer it may take
to see everyone lead.
Q. Do they have to lead younger children?
A. We recommend that if possible learners
should be given the opportunity to lead younger (or older) people,
however, we understand that this might not always be possible and
it is acceptable for learners to complete the course having only
led their peers.
Q. How long does the course take to
deliver?
A. This course has a recommended delivery time
of 30 hours; however, the time it takes will depend on a range of
factors including the previous experience of your learners (and
their general enthusiasm and attitude towards the
course!), learner numbers, delivery methods and external
links.
Q. Does the Maths Leader Award have
national recognition?
A. The Maths Leader Award is a
course which is accredited and certificated nationally by Sports
Leaders UK. Your successful learners will receive an official
Sports Leaders UK certificate.
Q. So is it a qualification?
A. No. The Maths Leader Award does not
sit on the Qualifications and Credit Framework
(QCF) and is therefore not a nationally recognised
qualification.
Q. Can I use the Maths Leader
Award to help my students meet any aspects of the KS3 National
Curriculum?
A. Yes. There are many places where the
Learning Outcomes for the Maths Leader Award may help your
students to meet some parts of the KS3 NC. See a full list of the
Maths Leader Award Learning Outcomes.
Q. Do I need to come on Tutor Training to
deliver the Maths Leader Award?
A. No. At present we do not offer any Tutor
Training for prospective tutors of this award. We feel that a maths
specialist, with help from the TRP and support from an experienced
PE Department, should be able to deliver the course with no formal
training from us. If you would like to attend one of our Tutor
Training days in order to familiarise yourself with the
underlying principles and concepts of leadership then you will be
more than welcome. However, please bear in mind that the day will
focus on leadership through sport and/or dance activities and will
not be tailored towards maths.
