Literacy Leader Award - How does it
work?
Content and format
The Literacy Leader Award is broken down into six
units, some of which tackle the generic leadership skills such as
communication and organisation whilst others focus on subject
specific skills such as understanding the basic principles of
literacy and running a literacy event.
Each unit is composed of Learning Outcomes which guide tutors on
what they might deliver and what the learners may achieve in order
to complete the course. There is no formal assessment in the
Literacy Leader Award. The Learning Outcomes are meant to give
structure and guidance but it is up to the tutor to decide which
learners complete the course.
Units of the award
Unit 1 - Planning, preparing and assisting a
simple literacy activity
In this unit learners will plan some simple literacy
activities and then deliver them to others. They might lead other
members of the group or perhaps get the opportunity to lead younger
children.
Unit 2 - Communication and motivation skills for
leading a literacy activity
This unit is all about how we communicate. Learners will
look at different types of communication, both verbal and
non-verbal, and discover the most effective ways to get their
message across.
Unit 3 - Delivering literacy across the
curriculum
To complete this unit learners may show that they
understand how literacy is used in lots of different curriculum
areas, and that they can lead literacy activities in subjects other
than English.
Unit 4 - Compendium of literacy games and
activities
In this unit learners will look at a range of different
literacy games and activities and have a go at leading other people
in them.
Unit 5 - Organising and running a literacy
event
For this unit learners will plan, organise and deliver a
literacy event. They may also show that they can work with other
people and that they can publicise their event.
Unit 6 - Demonstration of leadership skills in
literacy
This unit gives learners the opportunity to put into
practice all of the things they have learnt during the
previous five units by leading others for a minimum
of one hour. This hour may well be broken down into small
sessions and they may either lead their peers or younger
children.
Tutoring the
award
An English teacher, teaching assistant or anyone who has
experience of working with young people in a teaching and learning
environment can deliver the award. Any person wishing to deliver
