Learning Outcomes
Each unit is broken down into Learning Outcomes. These Learning
Outcomes indicate what the learner is expected to know,
understand, or be able to do in order to pass each unit.
Unit 1 - Planning, preparing and
assisting a simple foreign language activity
On completion of this unit the learner should have
demonstrated competence in the following areas:
- Planning and preparation of a simple language activity.
- Delivery of a simple language activity whilst under
supervision.
- Evaluation of a language session.
- Structuring future sessions taking into account self/peer
evaluation.
- Working within a group environment.
- Breaking down a language problem and communicating it simply to
the group.
Unit 2 - Basic communication and
motivation skills for leading a language activity
On completion of this unit the learner should have
demonstrated competence in the following areas:
- Verbal and non-verbal communication within a language
context.
- Communication with groups and individuals involved in language
activities.
- Use of some AV for communication purposes.
- Use of a variety of motivational methods whilst leading a
language session.
Unit 3 - Cultural understanding of
the chosen country
On completion of this unit the learner should have
understood and recognised:
- Cultural differences in the foreign country.
- Different traditions, customs etc., of the foreign
country.
- How widely the language is spoken.
- Aspects of the foreign language that have been adopted into
English.
- Famous people, industries, music, dance etc., of the foreign
country.
Unit 4 - Compendium of language
games and activities
On completion of this unit the learner must
demonstrate their ability to lead younger children using a variety
of games and activities that will have been learned in this unit
by:
- Selecting appropriate level language game/activity for the
group they are working with.
- Ensuring that all participants are involved when they are
leading the activity.
- Delivering the activity safely and in a stimulating way.
- Being able to change the activity or break it down if
necessary, so that everyone can be involved.
Unit 5 - Organise and run a language
festival for younger participants
On completion of this unit the learner should have
demonstrated competence in the following areas:
- Planning and preparing some form of festival for younger
participants that involves activities using the foreign
language.
- Working as part of a team, sharing and negotiating ideas and
reaching a consensus with peers.
- Running a festival taking individual responsibility for some
aspects of work and contributing as a member of a team to
others.
- Planning and making decisions for the unexpected eventualities
that often occur including the use of a contingency plan.
- Evaluating both individual and team contributions to the event
and taking decisions that will improve future practice.
Unit 6 - Demonstration of leadership
skills in a foreign language
On completion of this unit the learner must be able
to:
- Plan, deliver and evaluate a number of language games or
activities for younger participants. These sessions must combine to
provide at least one hour of leadership experience.
