Foreign Language Leader - How does it work?

The Foreign Language Leader Award is broken down into six units, some of which tackle the generic leadership skills such as communication and organisation, whilst others focus on subject specific skills such as understanding the basic principles of foreign language and running a language festival/event.

Each unit is composed of Learning Outcomes which guide tutors on what they might deliver and what the learners may achieve in order to complete the course. There is no formal assessment in the Foreign Language Leader Award. The Learning Outcomes are meant to give structure and guidance but it is up to the tutor to decide which learners complete the course.

Units of the award

Unit 1 - Planning, preparing and assisting a simple foreign language activity
In this unit learners will plan some simple foreign language activities and then deliver them to others. They might lead other members of the group or perhaps get the opportunity to lead younger children.

Unit 2 - Communication and motivation skills for leading a foreign language activity
This unit is all about how we communicate. Learners will look at different types of communication, both verbal and non-verbal, and discover the most effective ways to get their message across.

Unit 3 - Cultural understanding of the chosen country
In this unit learners will gain an understanding and appreciation of the country's culture; including historic events, celebrations, traditions and customs, music and dance etc.

Unit 4 - Compendium of foreign language games and activities
In this unit learners will look at a range of different foreign language games and activities and have a go at leading other people in them.

Unit 5 - Organising and running a foreign language event
For this unit learners will plan, organise and deliver a foreign language festival/event. They may also show that they can work with other people and that they can publicise their event.

Unit 6 - Demonstration of leadership skills in foreign language
This unit gives learners the opportunity to put into practice all of the things they have learnt during the previous five units by leading others for a minimum of one hour. This hour may well be broken down into small sessions and they may either lead their peers or younger children.

Tutoring the award
A foreign language teacher, teaching assistant or anyone who has experience of working with young people in a teaching and learning environment can deliver the award. Any person wishing to deliver this award holding qualifications or experience other than those outlined above should contact Sports Leaders UK.
