Sport Wales - Active Young People

There are two Sport Wales Active Young People (AYP) programmes that involve volunteers, teachers and young leaders and which help young people become more active.

Active Young People 5x60 programme

5x60 is an inclusive programme designed to encourage more young people of secondary school age to participate in physical activity and sport. 5x60 comprises a choice of traditional sporting activities similar to Dragon Sport; coached activities such as tennis, badminton and squash and informal activities such as table tennis, dance, cheerleading and some outdoor and adventurous activities such as orienteering. 5x60 seeks to encourage more young people than ever before to take part in sport and physical activity by removing the barriers that prevent some from taking part. It takes place generally on the secondary school site, and is lead by voluntary coaches, Sports Leaders and parents.

Active Young People Dragon Sport programme

Dragon Sport is an inclusive activity programme for young people between the ages of seven and 11. Included in the Dragon Sports are: athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, tennis, golf and rugby. Each Dragon Sport is supported by a series of game and activity cards, and a bag of equipment suitable for young people within this age group. The game and activity cards offer progressive activities that support skill development, leading to the Government Body mini-game. Dragon Sport is run on primary school sites, out of school hours and is lead by voluntary organisers.

Sport Wales and Sports Leaders UK working together

Sports Leaders UK is a UK and Wales regulated Awarding Organisation and Charitable Foundation that provides a range of leadership awards and qualifications.

Sports Leaders UK has a longstanding partnership with Sport Wales and has been tasked by Sport Wales to review the existing Active Young People Organisers course.

The existing Active Young People Organisers Course

Learners can become an Active Young People Organiser by attending a one day course which helps them to understand and carry out their role; to organise safe, fun and purposeful physical activity for all young people; and work generally within the aims and philosophy of the Active Young People programme, and the specific aims of the programme for which they will deliver.

The new Active Young People Organisers Course

The content of the course has not changed, however learners aged 12 and above will be able to undertake this course and achieve an Active Young People Organiser Award which will be certificated by Sports Leaders UK on behalf of Sport Wales. This means that learners will receive formal recognition for completing their course and also means that the they will be able to use the learning gained in the Active Young People Organiser Award towards Sports Leaders UK Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications.

There is a certain amount of learning that crosses over from one programme to the other which means the Active Young People Organiser Award and the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications can work alongside each other feeding into the Sport Wales/Sports Leaders UK Leadership Continuum.

Why it would be of benefit to run the AYP programmes alongside Sports Leaders UK programmes in centres?

Running the AYP programmes alongside the Sports Leaders UK programmes would allow learners to cross reference their learning from their Active Young People Organiser Award to a Sports Leaders UK Level 1 or Level 2 qualification - a nationally recognised qualification which sits on the same framework as do BTECs and NVQs.

Sports Leaders UK will accredit the appropriate Learning Outcomes from the Active Young People Organiser Award as prior learning - meaning that the learner can credit that AYP learning towards gaining a leadership qualification, taking them further along the Leadership Continuum.

This benefits the learner in providing opportunities to gain additional qualifications.

It benefits the community by creating qualified leaders that can assist and lead activities in a variety of settings.
