Sports Leaders UK Glossary of Terms  

TERMS DEFINITION
Accreditation Process through which Sports Leaders UK authorise an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC), and/or staff to deliver a chosen qualification.
Additional Tutor An additional tutor on an award or qualification, who has not been accredited, may deliver the course, but cannot assess and sign the Record of Achievement as the Tutor/Assessor.
Appeal Process through which Sports Leaders UK may be challenged on the outcome of an enquiry about results or, where appropriate, other procedural decisions affecting an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) or individual candidates.
Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) Organisation or consortium accountable to Sports Leaders UK for the delivery and assessment of a qualification or unit.
Assessment Process of making judgements on whether a candidate's work meets the Assessment Criteria for a qualification or unit, or part of a unit.
Assessment Criteria Minimum standards that a candidate must achieve in order to demonstrate that the Learning Outcomes have been met for a qualification or unit, or part of a unit.
Assessment Methods Description of the methods, processes and tasks to be used to assess a qualification or unit. For example, tutor observation, question and answer, written evidence.
Authentication Confirmation that work has been produced by the candidate who is putting it forward for assessment, and all relevant practical assessments have been observed by the Tutor/Assessor.
Awarding Body Sports Leaders UK is the accredited Awarding Body that awards the qualifications.
Awards Sports Leaders UK courses that are not on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (pre-September 2010), or the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) (post-September 2010). Includes the Young Leader Award; Day Certificate in Sports Leadership; Women, Get Set, Go!; Foreign Language Leader Award, Maths Leader Award and Literacy Leader Award.
Candidate Person who is registered with Sports Leaders UK for an award or qualification.
Centre Course Manager (CCM) Person appointed by the Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) to take overall responsibility for all the registered awards, qualifications and candidates at the centre. They will assist with investigations into enquiries about results, and appeals made by a candidate.
Certificate Record of attainment in a unit or qualification issued by Sports Leaders UK.
Competence Ability to demonstrate that the Learning Outcomes of the qualification syllabus have been achieved.
Core Values Statements that support the work of Sports Leaders UK, and its qualifications, as an Awarding Body.
Course Outline Plan for delivering a qualification including details of assessment tasks, assessment methods and types of activities.
Creative and Cultural Skills The Sector Skills Council for Creative and Cultural Industries including craft, cultural heritage, design, literature, music, performing arts and visual arts
Enquiry about results Process through which Sports Leaders UK may be asked to check one or more of the procedures leading to a reported result.
Evidence Records that show what has been achieved, when it was achieved, and by whom.
External Verification Report Process involving a Sports Leaders UK representative, checking that accurate and consistent standards of assessment are achieved and maintained across centres, and over time.
External Verifier (EV) Person appointed by Sports Leaders UK to ensure accurate and consistent standards of assessment, across centres, and over time.
Exemplar Materials Specimens of acceptable and unacceptable work and activities to highlight good practice and reinforce Sports Leaders UK standards.
Independent Assessor (IA) Individiual appointed by the Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) to observe candidates to ensure that they have met the required Learning Outcomes of the qualification. The individual has no vested interest in the outcome.
Internal Verifier (IV) Individual appointed by the Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) to ensure accurate and consistent standards of assessment are maintained between assessors within a centre delivering the same qualification. They will assist with investigations into enquiries about results, and appeals made by the candidate.
Joint Advisory Committee for Qualifications Approval (JACQA) Established from a merger of some functions of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). Includes representatives of higher education and employers, to advise the government on which qualifications should receive public funding.
Leadership Experience Length of time that candidates must work with a group of participants to practise the skills, knowledge and understanding attained during the delivery of the qualification.
Lead External Verifier Person appointed by Sports Leaders UK to manage an area, and the External Verifiers (EVs) working within the area.
Learning Outcome Statement of what a candidate is expected to know, understand, and/or do in order to achieve a unit.
National Database of Accredited Qualifications (NDAQ) Contains details of qualifications that are accredited by regulators of external qualifications in England (Ofqual), Wales (DCELLS) and Northern Ireland (CCEA).
National Governing Body (NGB) An organisation that oversees local clubs for a selected sport, and may be one governing body with separate branches for England, Scotland and Wales. Responsible for local clubs all over the country, organising competitions and supporting National Teams. Also responsible for establishing rules for the sport, and organising educational programmes for teachers, coaches and officials.
National Occupational Standards (NOS) Statements that provide a benchmark for qualifications in terms of level and difficulty for an occupational field.
National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Framework used by regulatory authorities to position qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Sports Leaders UK's qualifications will move to the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) from September 2010.
Offices of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) Regulator of qualifications, exams and tests in England. Also regulate National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in Northern Ireland.
Participant(s) Person or group being led by a candidate for a chosen activity or session.
Pass Minimum standards that a candidate must achieve in order to gain a qualification.
Performance Review Undertaken by an External Verifier (EV). Monitoring of activities on the consistency of standards which are maintained by an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC).
Policies Detailed guidance on how Sports Leaders UK operates and provides support to centres, and/or candidates, including points of contact and expected timescales.
Qualifications Sports Leaders UK courses that are on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (pre-September 2010), and the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) (post-September 2010).
Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Framework for recognising and accrediting qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Sports Leaders UK's qualifications will move to the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) from September 2010.
Qualification Syllabus Course of study where candidates must demonstrate competence and provide evidence that they have achieved all units of the qualification.
Quality Assurance Procedures Process through which an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) records and can demonstrate competence and provide evidence that they have achieved all units of the qualification.
Reasonable Adjustments Arrangements made in advance to allow a candidate to demonstrate achievement during an assessment. Arrangements must ensure that other candidates are not disadvantaged as a result of the adjustment.
Record of Achievement Evidence record that is completed to show what a candidate has achieved.
Registration Process through which an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) registers candidates to undertake a qualification or unit.
Regulatory Authorities Government-designated statutory organisations required to establish national standards for qualifications, and secure consistent compliance with them.
Risk Activities Activities that are deemed dangerous or inappropriate for an unqualified candidate to lead.
Scheme of Work Detailed plan showing breakdown per unit of the delivery of a qualification including assessment tasks and methods. It should cover the required programme of study, identifying the main objectives and suggested activities that can help to meet those objectives. The detail of each session, that makes up the teaching of each unit, should be recorded in a session plan - not in the Scheme of Work.
SkillsActive The Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning. Directed by employers, SkillsActive leads the skills and productivity drive across sport and recreation, health and fitness, outdoors, play work and caravan industries.
Special Considerations Procedures implemented at the time of an assessment to allow a candidate to demonstrate achievement. Arrangements must ensure that other candidates are not simultaneously disadvantaged as a result of any adjustment.
Technical Update Important information provided to all centres to update and inform staff of improvements and changes made to Quality Assurance procedures.
Tutor/Assessor Accredited person within an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) who assesses the candidate's work using the Assessment Criteria.
Tutor/Assessor Accreditation Process through which Sports Leaders UK ensures that a qualification and associated specification conform to the appropriate standards. This is carried out by an External Verifier (EV), who ensures that the tutor understands the content of the qualification and can demonstrate that there are procedures in place to deliver the qualification to the expected standards.
Tutor Resource Pack (TRP) Pack or interactive CD that all centres need to deliver the awards and qualifications. Includes syllabus specifications, ideas for delivery and worksheets.
Tutor Training Continuous Professional Development: provides tutors with a development opportunity to learn about Sports Leaders UK's leadership qualifications - giving an insight into the content of the different courses available, by attending a variety of workshops and briefings, both theory and practical. This information allows tutors to consider the benefits of the qualifications and inspires them to deliver leadership qualifications at their Approved Assessment Centre (AAC).
Unit Detailed statement defining the title, accredited unit number, Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria that contribute to the qualification syllabus.
